Altamiro Carrilho
21/12/1924
After playing the snare drum in the band Lira de Árion, he began studying the flute. He started out in newcomer shows and made a reputation with his improvisation skills, participating in assorted groups, albums and shows. Carrilho recorded his first choro, "Flauteando na Chacrinha", in 1949. In 1951, he replaced Benedito Lacerda in Canhoto’s group. With the group, he accompanied big stars like Vicente Celestino, Orlando Silva and Francisco Alves. His group, Altamiro e Sua Bandinha, sold over 700 thousand copies of the hit track "Rio Antigo". In the 1970s, he became one of the most sought after flutists in Brazil, due to the second wave of choro. Carrilho is still active, participating in recording sessions and shows.
