Ângela Rô Rô
05/12/1949
Singer, songwriter and pianist, she started out her career in nightclubs in Rio, singing and playing the piano. The nickname Rô Rô is due to her husky, low-key voice. Influenced by singers like Maysa and North-American jazz muses like Ella Fitzgerald, she wound up in London during the period of military government in Brazil. There, she would sing in pubs and work in restaurants. Back in Brazil, Angela made her debut album in 1979, which featured her first big hits, "Amor Meu Grande Amor" (written with Ana Terra), and "Tola Foi Você". In 1980, she released the LP "Só Nos Resta Viver" whose title track remains successful to this day. "Escândalo", her third album, boasted the title on the cover printed in a newspaper headline fashion, as a parody of the scandalous news that came out in the press due to end of her marriage to singer Zizi Possi. In 1982, Angela went national with the song "Simples Carinho" (João Donato/Abel Silva). Famous for her irreverent behavior, for her appreciation of booze and for having been the first female Brazilian singer to come out of the closet, Angela ended up being regarded as a marginal artist. She made two other albums, "Prova de Amor" (1988) and "Nosso Amor ao Armagedom - Ao Vivo" (1993). Her most impressive songs are styled as ballads, jazz and blues.
