Astrud Gilberto
29/03/1940
Born in Bahia (Northeast Brazil) and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Astrud was an amateur singer and used to hang out at bossa nova clubs back in the 50s, when she met her husband-to-be, João Gilberto. The couple headed to the United States in 1963, and she participated in the emblematic album "Getz/Gilberto", with saxophonist Stan Getz and Tom Jobim. Astrud’s most well known recording is the English version of "Garota de Ipanema" (Jobim/V.Moraes), also her debut as a professional singer. When her marriage to João Gilberto came to an end, she remained in the States as a crooner for the Stan Getz group and as a solo artist, making bossa nova and jazz albums. In the 70s, she took on composing, and her song "Live Today" received an award at a music festival in Tokyo. During the next decade, she teamed up a band and went on world tours. In 1990, Astrud started a production company, Gregmar, releasing records in the US, Europe and Asia. In 1996 she appeared in the "Red Hot + Rio" compilation singing "Desafinado" with George Michael.
