20/04/1969
Born in farm in Minas Gerais (SE), he arrived in Rio de Janeiro by chance, working as a pharmacyst. By the late 1920s, he got involved with carnival groups and radio stars. Soon, his sambas were being recorded by Almirante ("Sexta-Feira") and Carmen Miranda ("Tempo Perdido"). He wrote samba-tunes and carnival marches that were recorded by the greatest singers in Brazil, such as Carlos Galhardo ("Quanta Tristeza", with andré Filho), Silvio Caldas ("Saudade Dela") and Orlando silva ("Errei, Erramos"). In 1941, he debuted as an interpreter with "Leva Meu Samba" and "Alegria na Casa de Pobre" (with Abel Neto). The next year he recorded "Ai, Que Saudades da Amélia" (with Mário Lago), one of his greatest hits, such as "Na Cadência do Samba", "Laranja Madura", "Fim de Comédia", "Vai, Mas Vai Mesmo" and "Mulata Assanhada".
