Caetano Veloso
07/08/1942
Regarded as one of the most prominent artists within Brazilian Popular Music, he was born on the countryside of Bahia (Northeast Brazil), and started singing and playing guitar in Salvador (state capital), where he attended school along with his sister, singer Maria Bethânia. While in Salvador, he gets turned on by bossa nova and particularly by João Gilberto. In the 60s, Caetano meets Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Tom Zé, and the group starts performing together. In 1965, Maria Bethânia accepts an invitation to replace Nara Leão on the show "Opinião", in Rio de Janeiro, and Caetano decides to follow her. His first single was released that same year, featuring the songs "Cavaleiro" and "Samba em Paz". In the next years, he competes in popular music festivals and makes movie soundtracks. The first LP, "Domingo", comes out in 1967, with Gal Costa’s participation. Caetano sets off to head the tropicalist movement in 1968, releasing the album "Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis" with Gil, Gal, Tom Zé, Torquato Neto, Rogério Duprat, Capinam, Nara Leão and Os Mutantes. During a music contest, still in ‘68, his song "É Proibido Proibir" was intensely booed and subsequently disqualified, provoking an angry reaction from the composer. In 1969, after being arrested by the military government, Veloso leaves toward political exile in England, where he writes such material as "London London" and "Como Dois e Dois" and makes records. He returns to Brazil in 1972, touring the country and starting to work as a record producer. In 1976, Caetano, Gil, Gal and Bethânia reunite as a group and form the Doces Bárbaros, making an album and going out on tour. Along the 80s, he continues recording and producing albums like "Outras Palavras", "Cores, Nomes", "Uns" and "Velô"; in 1986 Veloso hosts a TV show – Chico & Caetano - with Chico Buarque, where they sing and receive guests. The early 90s started out with one more successful record, "Circuladô". Soon afterward, the album "Tropicalia 2" re-couples the music of Caetano and Gilberto Gil. In 1997 Caetano releases his first book, "Verdade Tropical", a personal report on his look at the world. His album "Livro", from 1998, was awarded Best World Music record at the Grammys in 2000.
