One of the greatest composers of the samba school Portela, he started participating in samba groups at age 6, with his father, who played the flute. Later on, Candeia learned to play the guitar and cavaquinho, joining the samba school Vai Como Pode, which would eventually become Portela. He wrote the first samba-enredo (theme) for the new school in 1953, getting maximum score at the parade. Candeia joined the police force in 1961, but a gun shot caused him to retire and spend his days on a wheelchair, drastically modifying his lifestyle. His sambas became more introspective, like "Peso dos Anos", "Eterna Paz" and "De Qualquer Maneira". Clara Nunes, Clementina de Jesus and Paulinho da Viola have recorded his sambas; Paulinho was also a partner. Some of his most famous songs are "Preciso Me Encontrar" (recorded by Cartola and Marisa Monte), "Filosofia do Samba" and "Minhas Madrugadas" (written with Paulinho da Viola).
