Carlinhos Brown
23/11/1962
Percussionist, composer, producer and culture promoter, raised in the suburbs of Salvador (capital of Bahia, Northeast Brazil), his stage name pays homage to funk/soul godfather James Brown. Skilled at different percussion instruments, Brown became one of the most required musicians in Bahia in the 80s. In 1985 he was playing with Caetano Veloso’s back up band in the album "O Estrangeiro", which featured Carlinhos’ song "Meia Lua Inteira", turned into a hit. He also accompanied João Gilberto, Djavan and João Bosco in their world tours. In the 90s, he projected his name, both in Brazil and abroad, as front man for Timbalada, a group that gathered more than 100 percussionists and singers, most of them coming from the same poor area where he was born. Brown proceeded to release solo records ("Alfagamabetizado" and "Omelete Man"), writing, singing and playing his compositions. Over 200 of his songs have been recorded by artists like Gal Costa, Marisa Monte ("Segue o Seco", "Maria de Verdade", "Arrepio", "Magamalabares"), Daniela Mercury ("Rapunzel", "Rimas Irmãs"), Cássia Eller ("E.C.T."), Daúde ("Lavanda"). Today, Carlinhos Brown supports dozens of musical-educational projects in Bahia.
