Carlos Malta
Composer, arranger and teacher, Malta is one of the greatest Brazilian woodwind specialists in activity nowadays. His professional debut was at age 18, and he spent 12 years playing with Hermeto Pascoal’s band. He’s also played with Egberto Gismonti, Pat Metheny, Ernie Watts, Gil Evans, Marcus Miller and Charlie Haden. Malta is one of the most requested musicians for recording sessions in Brazil, appearing in albums by Lenine, Paralamas do Sucesso, Leila Pinheiro, Marcos Suzano, Caetano Veloso and others. He plays different types of woodwind instruments, from bass-flute to pife (a rustic, Brazilian version of martial flute), as well as oriental and indigenous flutes made of bamboo. Malta is also a skilled, self-taught saxophonist. He played festivals at Cannes, Montreal, Hamburg, North Sea, Paris, and Vancouver. He decided to aim exclusively at his solo career in 1993, releasing the independent album "O Escultor do Vento" in 1998. He also recorded "Carlos Malta e Coreto Urbano" (live) and "Carlos Malta e Pife Muderno" in 1998.
