Chiclete com Banana
The band started out as Scorpius and had a first taste of success while playing the trios elétricos (trucks specially remodeled to accommodate a live band, created in Bahia, in the 70s, for Carnival purposes) in Salvador (capital of Bahia, Northeast Brazil) in the early 80s. The new name came up when they decided to make their first album, "Traz os Montes", in 1982. The classic samba "Chiclete Com Banana" - written by Gordurinha and Almira and turned popular by Jackson do Pandeiro’s version -, translated to perfection the band’s will to mix in different elements to their music. Chiclete’s first successful track was "Mistério de Estrelas", from their second album, two years after the first one had come out. They appeared on TV shows and their music was aired nonstop on radio stations throughout the country, mainly around Carnival time. Today, they perform all year round at off-season Carnival parties in Brazil. They merged with the group Bloco Camaleão to form Nana Banana, one of the liveliest performances during Carnival in Bahia.
