Chico César
26/01/1964
Born in Cantolé da Rocha, countryside of Paraíba (Northeast Brazil), he headed to the capital, João Pessoa, at age 16, and became a member of the group Jaguaribe Carne, who made experimental music and poetry. In 1985, César settled in São Paulo, working as a journalist and performing at alternative theaters and clubs. Later, he traveled to Germany, playing a few shows, and came back to Brazil determined to work exclusively with music. He lined up the band Cuscuz Clã and released the CD "AosVivos" through independent label Velas, in 1994. César began a series of weekly shows at a bohemian college bar. His first hit was "À Primeira Vista" (also recorded by Daniela Mercury), followed by "Mama África". The album "Cuscuz-Clã" gave him national recognition, but that didn’t happen with "Beleza Mano", in spite of its distinctive repertoire, featuring tracks like "Reprocissão", "Sanfoninha", "Se Você Viajar" and "Paraíba Meu Amor". He spent a few years without recording new material, frequently touring Europe and the United States. In March 2000, Chico César released his fourth album, "Mama Mundi", produced by Mario Manga.
