Chiquinha Gonzaga
17/10/1847
28/02/1935
First woman to be in the spotlight as a songwriter in the history of Brazilian music, Chiquinha started composing songs and waltzes as a teenager. She lived a troubled life, divorcing her husband and achieving financial independence in a time when such behavior was considered inadequate for women. She was a piano teacher and participated in choro meetings, playing at parties and balls. Her first hit was the polca "Atraente", in 1877. She also wrote music scores for theater plays, in spite of having to face strong male competition. Chiquinha worked briefly as a conductor. Involved in politics, she was very active in abolitionist campaigns in the1880s. In the first years of the 20th century, she toured around Europe as a performer. Back in Brazil, she wrote more music scores and operettas. Her greatest hit is the carnival march "Ô Abre Alas".
