Fafá de Belém
10/08/1956
Fafá comes from a middle-class family in the north of Brazil (Pará). As a teenager, she would run away from home at night to meet her friends and sing in bars. In 1973, she met with Quinteto Violado's agent, Roberto Santana, who encouraged her to invest in music. Following his advice, she performed in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and her native Belém. Success kicked in in 1975, when she recorded "Filho da Bahia" (Walter Queiroz). Soon, her first single came out. The first LP, "Tamba Tajá", was released in 1976. The follow-up, "Água" (1977), elevated Fafá de Belém's status, as she sold 100 thousand copies and enjoyed hits like "Foi Assim" and "Pauapixuna" (Paulo André and Ruy Barata), "Raça" and "Sedução" (Milton Nascimento/ Fernando Brant). In 1979, she released "Sob Medida" (Chico Buarque) on the eclectic album "Estrela Radiante". In the 80s, Fafá established herself as a romantic singer, but she continued to record other styles, such as forró and bolero. By the late 1980s, she invested in her international career, mainly in Portugal, where she is very popular. Fafá has made a fado album, "Meu Fado", in 1992. In 1996, she resumed recording regional music, such as "Vermelho" (Chico da Silva). Other hits: "Dentro de Mim Mora Um Anjo" (Sueli Costa/ Cacaso), "Bicho Homem" (Milton Nascimento/ Fernando Brant), "Aconteceu Você" (Guilherme Arantes), "Menestrel das Alagoas" (Milton Nascimento/ Fernando Brant), "Memórias" (Leonardo), "Coração do Agreste" (Moacyr Luz/ Aldir Blanc).
