Gonzaguinha

The adoptive son of the King of Baião, Luiz Gonzaga, was raised by his godparents, who introduced him into the world of music. He attended samba meetings at samba schools Estácio and Unidos de São Carlos (both in Rio de Janeiro) from a very tender age. Gonzaguinha went to college to study economics, and met Ivan Lins and lyricist Aldir Blanc. In 1968, he participated in a college festival with the song "Pobreza Por Pobreza". Next year, he scored number one with "O Trem". In 1973, he appeared on a TV show singing "Comportamento Geral", which was a poke onto the military regime, causing the single with that song to sell out. Since then, he would always face censorship problems. Still in the 70s, Gonzaguinha toured the whole country; in 1976, he made the album "Começaria Tudo Outra Vez", achieving great success. He released 16 LPs and participated in dozens of others. After his death - due to a car crash - compilations and live albums have come out. His songs were successfully recorded by singers like Fagner, Elis Regina, Simone and others. Some of his standards are: "A Felicidade Bate à Sua Porta", "Espere por Mim, Morena", "É", "Sangrando", "O Que É, O Que É" and "Um Homem Também Chora".
