Itamar Assumpção
13/09/1949
Labeled as a vanguard enfant terrible, Itamar Assumpção started performing by the end of the 70’s, at the Lira Paulistana theater in São Paulo. He shared the stage with other vanguard musicians and groups from São Paulo, such as Arrigo Barnabé, Premeditando o Breque and Grupo Rumo, presenting a combination of music, poetry, video, dance and drama that was very important to consolidate a space for experimentation. Assumpção’s music blends samba, reggae, funk, pop and rock. He released three independent albums in the 80’s, but his 1988 record, "Intercontinental! Quem Diria! Era Só o que Faltava...", was released by Continental.
Assumpção’s songs have been recorded by many renowned singers, such as Ná Ozzetti, Cássia Eller ("Aprendiz de Feiticeiro"), Monica Salmaso ("Canto em Qualquer Canto", by Itamar Assumpção and Ná Ozzetti) and Zélia Duncan ("Código de Acesso"). Assumpção played with the band Orquídeas do Brasil, and in 1995 he released a CD which included songs by Brazilian composer Ataulfo Alves. Itamar Assumpção also works as a producer and with the band Isca de Polícia. He regularly performs in Europe, particularly in Germany (which he visited for the first time in 1988, performing at the Dokumenta in Kassel), where a number of his records have been put out. Assumpção has recently released his latest album, "Pretobrás, Por Que Não Pensei Nisso Antes...".
