Ivo Meirelles

Ivo Meirelles started his career as a samba musician at the Mangueira Samba School, in the district of Mangueira, Rio de Janeiro. In the 80’s, Meirelles wrote one of the most popular samba tunes of all times, being officially chosen to represent Mangueira at the carnival parade: "Caymmi Mostra ao Mundo o que a Bahia e a Mangueira Têm", whose chorus "Tem xinxim e acarajé/ Tamborim e samba no pé" has been played at every carnival ball ever since.

Regarded as the greatest sensation of Mangueira Samba School, Meirelles chose to experiment with other music styles, such as funk, rock and pop music. After holding the post of director at Mangueira, he founded the group Funk'n'Lata and collaborated with Brazilian rocker Lobão, mixing funk with samba drum beats. This musical shift had to do with Meirelles being forced to abandon Mangueira, due to internal disputes among the samba school members.

Funk'n'Lata is comprised of fake blond members, inspired by Meirelles, and combines Afro-Brazilian music elements with R&B, rap, hip hop and funk played with drums and rattles, creating a very original effect.

In 1999, Meirelles founded his own label - Do Morro Produções – which aims at launching new artists and bands.
