Jair Rodrigues
06/02/1939
He held a number of different jobs in his youth, in the countryside of São Paulo: shoeshine boy, mechanic, construction worker, etc., until participating in a talent radio show for newcomers and being placed first. Then he started working as a crooner in nightclubs, settling in the city of São Paulo until 1960. Jair released singles and the LP "O Samba Como Ele É". Rodrigues got more noticed by 1964, when he recorded the big hit "Deixa Isso Pra Lá" (Alberto Paz/Edson Menezes), appropriately regarded as a pre-rap song, because of its verses spoken in a funky fashion. In 1965, he met Elis Regina and made three live albums with her, "Dois na Bossa" volumes 1, 2 and 3. It was so successful that the couple became TV hosts for the show O Fino da Bossa, one of the most important on Brazilian television. He also played festivals, like in 1966, when his performance of the song "Disparada" (Geraldo Vandré/T.Barros) granted him the first place, along with Chico Buarque’s "A Banda". That same year, he delivered one of his greatest hits ever, "Tristeza" (Niltinho/Haroldo Lobo). "Triste Madrugada" (Jorge Costa), "Casa de Bamba" (Martinho da Vila), "Tengo-Tengo (Mangueira, Minha Querida Madrinha)" (Zuzuca) and "Vai, Meu Samba" (Ari do Cavaco/ Otacílio de Souza) are some of the other tracks that Jair Rodrigues turned into hits. He managed to keep a steady schedule for shows, albums and tours, along the decades, and is still in activity.
