Joanna
27/01/1957
Raised in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, she debuted on festivals and as a backing vocalist. She adopted the stage name Joanna in 1979, recording her first LP, "Nascente". The first hit, "Descaminhos" (Joanna/Sarah Benchimol), was on that album. In the following years, Joanna would collect hits, both as an interpreter and as a songwriter: "Decisão" (Joanna), "Momentos" (Joanna), "Recado (Meu Namorado)" (Renato Teixeira), "Quarto de Hotel", "Uma Canção de Amor" (Gonzaguinha), "Amanhã Talvez" and "Amor Bandido" (both Sullivan/ Massadas). Along her 20-year career, Joanna kept recording big seller albums, eventually becoming popular in Argentina and Portugal, too. Her repertoire is usually based upon the market’s calls. In 1994, though, she surprisingly made an album dedicated to the music of Lupiscínio Rodrigues. She recorded "Joanna 20 Anos" in 1999, reviewing her career and including previously unreleased songs and classics like Chiquinha Gonzaga’s "Lua Branca".
