In spite of having been born in the countryside of Rio de Janeiro, Martinho da Vila is known as a samba singer and composer from Vila Isabel, in the north area of Rio de Janeiro city. Martinho da Vila made his music debut at a music festival in 1967, singing "Menina Moça". In 1969, Martinho da Vila recorded his first album, "Martinho da Vila", including some big hits, like "Casa de Bamba", "O Pequeno Burguês" and the official carnival samba tunes "Iaiá do Cais Dourado" and "Carnaval de Ilusões", which would introduce a new format to the traditional samba. Vila's popularity grew in 1974, with the release of his LP "Canta, Canta, Minha Gente", which featured the samba "Disritmia", extensively played on the radio. In 1981, Vila made a romantic album entitled "Sentimentos", including the track "Ex-amor".

Martinho's 1995 album, "Tá Delícia, Tá Gostoso", sold over a million copies and is regarded as one of his greatest accomlishments. It featured the songs "Mulheres" (Toninho Gerais), "Cuca Maluca" (Garcia do Salgueiro), "Devagar, Devagarinho" (Eraldo Divagar) and "Tá Delícia, Tá Gostoso". In 1997, Martinho bought a bar in Villa Isabel, which he named Butiquim do Martinho. The bar became the meeting point for samba players in the town. In the following year, Sony released the CD "3.0 Turbinado Ao Vivo", which includes some of his past hits ("Quem É do Mar Não Enjoa", "Vem Chegando, Chega Mais", "Casa de Bamba", "Canta, Canta Minha Gente"), as well as samba standards ("Batuque na Cozinha, de João da Baiana; "Pelo Telefone", de Donga e Mauro de Almeida).
