Maysa

Born into a rich, traditional family, she got married at age 18 to a man twenty years older than her. She used to write songs and sing since before the wedding. When a musical producer heard her, he wanted to hire Maysa immediately, but she was pregnant and asked him to wait till her baby was born. "Convite para Ouvir Maysa" came out in four volumes between 1956 and 59 on RGE, with the hits "Ouça", "Adeus" and "Meu Mundo Caiu". She was turned into a star, which was disapproved by her husband's family, and the couple split up soon. Maysa was devastated. Her songs, already on the blues side, became even more melancholic, as exemplified on "Felicidade Infeliz" (Maysa), "Solidão" (Antônio Bruno), "Bom dia, Tristeza" (Adoniran Barbosa/ Vinicius de Moraes), "Tristeza" (Haroldo Lobo/ Niltinho), "Ne Me Quite Pas" (Jacques Brel) and "Bloco da Solidão" (Jair Amorim/ Evaldo Gouveia). Maysa moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1960 and recorded the album "O Barquinho", a bossa nova hallmark, accompanied by Tamba Trio. Her life was always agitated with tours, love affairs and alcohol abuse, but still she made some of the most important albums in the history of Brazilian music. Her ints include Meditação" (Tom Jobim/ Newton Mendonça), "Dindi" (Jobim/ Aloysio de Oliveira) and "Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você" (Jobim/ Moraes).
