Monarco
17/08/1933
Born in a Rio de Janeiro suburb, Hildemar Diniz lived nearby Portela (the samba school) as a child. He was around the samba masters from a very early age and started to write his own sambas then. In 1950, Monarco became a member of Portela's composers' group, and today he performs with the Old School group. The first solo album was released in 1976, with songs like "O Quitandeiro (written with Paulo da Portela) and "Lenço" (with Francisco Santana). The album "Terreiro", was released in 1980. In 1995, he recorded the CD "A Voz do Samba", initially a project for the Japanese market. His sambas are constantly being recorded by artists like Beth Carvalho, Martinho da Vila, Paulinho da Viola and Roberto Ribeiro. Some of his greatest hits are "Vida de Rainha", "Passado de Glória" and "Coração em Desalinho", the latter written with Ratinho and recorded by Zeca Pagodinho.
