Nora Ney
20/03/1922
Nora debuted on the radio in 1951. Her unmistakable contralto voice helped forging a peculiar style. In the beginning, she would adopt a foreign repertoire and the stage name Nora May. Later on, she would be the first person to record the hallmark rock song "Rock Around the Clock" (Bill Halley) in Brazil, in 1956. She was a crooner in nightclubs and continued to work on the radio, along Dóris Monteiro and Jorge Goulart, whom she'd eventually marry. Her debut album, from 1952, featured two hits: "Menino Grande" (Antonio Maria) and "Ninguém me Ama" (Antonio Maria and Fernando Lbobo). In 1964, she left the country with her husband because of the military regime, returning only 8 years later and recording the album "Tire o seu Sorriso do Caminho". She was one of the first artists to perform in socialist countries like Rodhesia (currently Zimbabwe), China and former U.S.S.R. Nora recorded sambas written by Nelson Cavaquinho and Guilherme de Brito, Ataulfo Alves, Lupicínio Rodrigues and Dorival Caymmi. Other hits: "Aves Daninhas" (Lupicínio Rodrigues), "Bar da Noite" (Haroldo Barbosa/ Bidu Reis), "Vai, Mas Vai Mesmo" (Ataulfo Alves) and "Preconceito" (Antônio Maria/ Fernando Lobo).
