Pavilhão 9
Rap group emerged from the outskirts of São Paulo in 1990; their lyrics go about social problems suffered by the youth in the suburbs of the big cities. Strongly criticizing police brutality, some of Pavilhão’s members (Rho$$i, DJ Branco, Blindado, Marinho, Ortega, Thunder and Doze) perform wearing masks to hide their faces. They released the first album, Primeiro Ato (First Act) and subsequently put out three discs on Paradoxx: Procurados Vivos ou Mortos (or Wanted Dead or Alive, 1994), Cadeia Nacional (1997) – with guest appearances by Marcelo D2 (Planet Hemp), Igor and Max Cavalera – and Se Deus Vier, Que Venha Armado (If God Comes, He’d Better Bring His Gun, 1999). In 2000, they signed up to Warner Music. Differently from most rap and hip hop groups, Pavilhão uses guitar/bass/drums, besides the usual voice+scratches, adding a bit of hardcore to their music. Their greatest hits, so far, have been Otários Fardados, Apaga o Baseado, Mandando Bronca and Opalão Preto.
