Racionais MC's
One of the main Brazilian rap and hip hop groups, Racionais MC's appeared in the outskirts of São Paulo in the 80's, introducing a political speech in favor of the outcast population from big Brazilian cities. In 1988, they made their first recording, which was included in the compilation entitled "Consciência Black".
Two years later, the group recorded their first solo album, "Holocausto Urbano", playing a series of shows in the Greater São Paulo, where they started to establish a name. In 1991, they were the opening act at the (American group) Public Enemy gigs in Brazil.
Since 1992, the band has been developing social work geared to the deprived communities situated in the outskirts of São Paulo. The project includes school visits and lectures on drugs, police brutality, racism and other themes. The group's lyrics include slang language and idioms typical of these poor areas.
At the end of 1994, the group made a concert in downtown São Paulo that turned into a violent riot. The group was arrested and charged with inciting the riot. Police brutality is one the band's main issues.
The album "Sobrevivendo no Inferno" made Racionais famous and sold 500,000 copies. Still, the group adopted a dubious attitude in relation to the media and the record industry, which they regard as part of the system they fight against.
Some of the bands’ greatest hits are: "Fim de Semana no Parque", "Pânico na Zona Sul"; Mulheres Vulgares", "Hey Boy", "Diário de um Detento", "Fórmula Mágica da Paz" and "Homem na Estrada".
