Roberto Paiva
08/02/1921
As a teenager, Helim Silveira Neves (Roberto Paiva's real name) sang in a show for newcomers on the radio, in Rio de Janeiro, being placed first. He made friends with big stars like pianist Nonô and guitarist Laurindo de Almeida, who took him to Odeon, where he released his debut album in 1939. "Último Samba" and "Jardim das Flores Raras" appeared in that album. In the 40s, he launched a number of Roberto Martins songs, such as "Devagar com a Louça", "A Valsa dos Noivos" and "Leva Meu Coração". He was the first artist to ever record a song written by Tom Jobim & Vinicius de Moraes: Paiva released "Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você" on 10" in 1956. He remains as an eclectic singer whose repertoire ranges from romantic ballads to carnival marches.
