Timbalada

Percussive vocal group founded in the Candeal district, in Salvador, Bahia, in the late 80’s. Timbalada’s mentor is the director, promoter and musician Carlinhos Brown, with whom they developed the characteristic drumbeats of the timbales (wooden drums made of synthetic fiber, whose use were limited to the Afro-Brazilian religious ceremonies of Candomblé). The group created a different rhythm, with distinctive African influence. Timbalada’s sense of aesthetic is very impressive. The members of the group, known as timbaleiros, are very concerned with their looks, and they use body painting with tribal motives.

Timbalada’s founding members included the timbaleiros and the former members of the Vai Quem Vem band. They played with unusual percussive materials, such as cans, buckets, pots and pans. The group’s first rehearsals were held in 1989. Their first album, "Timbalada", was released in 1993, including some of their greatest hits, "Beija-flor" and "Canto pro Mar". In the following years, Timbalada made 6 other albums and toured Brazil and abroad.

The group includes 5 singers and a number of percussionists who take turns in their shows.
