Turíbio Santos
07/03/1943
One of the most important classical guitarists in Brazil, Turíbio was born in Maranhão (Northeast) and raised in Rio de Janeiro. He began studying music at age 10, with Oscar Caceres and Edino Krieger. Santos made his first recording, "12 Estudos" (Villa-Lobos pieces) at 19. In the 1960s, he joined Hermínio Bello de Carvalho and the movement that pursued the union of popular and classical music. By that time, he performed with Jacob do Bandolim, Aracy de Almeida, Clementina de Jesus and Paulo Tapajós, but remained as a classical artist. He studied in France, England ( with Julian Bream) and Spain (with Andre Segovia), having spent many years in France, where he became a music professor. With more than 40 albums recorded, he founded the Orchestra Brasileira de Violões in 1983.
