E-COLLECTION - JORGE BENJOR
Jorge Ben Jor (2000)

Cotação:
It all happened too fast back in 1963. Soon after acting as crooner in two tracks from the album Tudo Azul, by organist Zé Maria, (then) newcomer Jorge Ben signed up to record as a solo artist via Philips (current Universal). He released a 10-inch single with the same two songs that would later boost the sales of his first LP, Samba Esquema Novo, up to the (then) unusual figure of 100 thousand copies. Mas Que Nada and Por Causa de Você, the reasons for the phenomenon, re-appear in this compilation supported by Zé Maria’s organ (now regarded as lounge).
From that period, the selection jumps further into the 90’s, when his compositions turned funkier and his signature became Ben Jor. W/Brasil, from 1991, is a good example of that phase. In Eu Quero Ver a Rainha, he shares the mic with Brazilian soul godfather Tim Maia. The CD brings unique flashes from Ben’s career, like his version of Gilberto Gil’s Palco, a rare moment when he interprets other artist’s music. In general, this album presents his less inspired samba-funk phase (Pega Ela de Montão, Engenho de Dentro, Pisada de Elefante, Alcohol, Norma Jean and Dzarm, the latter in four different versions) and recycles standards such as A Banda do Zé Pretinho, Que Maravilha, Os Alquimistas Estão Chegando, Filho Maravilha and País Tropical. Even in a lesser moment, though, alchemist Ben Jor still has a lot to offer. (Tárik de Souza)
