Coming from the music nucleus at Alto José do Pinho, one f the poorest communities in Recife (NE), rap group Faces do Subúrbio have distinctly increased the quality of their music in this second album without losing their fierce punch. Zé Brown, Tiger, bassist Marcelo Massacre, guitarist Ony, drummer Garnizé and DJ KSB (recently replaced by DJ Ló) recorded the disc in 11 days at the Music Academy of Pernambuco, an uncommon location for the sextet’s hip hop, filled with heavy, gloomy bases and piercing guitars. But that’s not the only type of firing noticeable in the band’s punk/metal/rap crossover. Taking on account that way before the Americans, northeastern fellows already crafted their music upon rhythm and poetry, Faces insists in this connection with traditional beats, which they started exploring in their first demo release in 1997.
The opening track features a rare poetic moment (Entre a Vida e a Poesia, or Between Life and Poetry), while the coco/embolada reappear in all its glory in Butadas, in a raw manner, with only voice and tambourine. As a whole, Como é Triste de Olhar attacks the social chaos as seen from those who suffer more with it. And if it bothers anyone, they don’t give a damn, as stated in Se Não Gosta, Respeite (You Might Not Like It, But Show Some Respect). (Tárik de Souza)
