After having spent 15 years accompanying Hermeto Pascoal, pianist Jovino Santos Neto settled in Seattle (USA) in 1993 and started developing his music. There, he started his own publishing company, Real Angle Music. Besides publishing his own work, he has recently put out the book Tudo É Som, a collection of 32 of Hermeto's sheet music.
This album, recorded live in April of 2000 in Olympia (Washington state) presents Jovino's songs performed by his group (Harvey Wainapel, saxophones and clarinet; Chuck Deardorf, bass; Mark Ivester, drums and percussion; Jeff Busch, percussion). His music is a mixture of jazz and Hermeto's philosophy of total music. The healthy salad appears straight from track one, Mendanha, which features cuíca and calrinet. On Pitombeira, Jovino's piano solos come out freely.
Like Hermeto, Jovino is an organic songwriter, with spontenous grooves and rhythms. Macaé, Maracatrês, The Flowing of the Night and Jujuba are other fine tracks. The album can be purchased at http://www.jovisan.net.
