Elba Ramalho
17/08/1951
Born on the countryside of the State of Paraíba (Northeast), Elba Ramalho first got interested in music in her teens, while living in the town of Campina Grande. In her college years, she joined the band As Brasas, being spotted by the producer of the acclaimed northeastern music quintet Quinteto Violado. Invited to join the group as a crooner, Ramalho dropped out of the Sociology and Economics school and moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1974. Willing to remain in Rio, Elba worked as an actress and dancer, eventually getting a part in the 1979 production of Chico Buarque’s play "Ópera do Malandro". In the play, she sang the song "O Meu Amor". When the play closed, she made an album for CBS. At that time, CBS was investing heavily in musicians from the Northeast of Brazil. Gradually, Elba Ramalho established herself as one the greatest names in Brazilian music, with expressive figures in record sales due to her lively stage performances. Her greatest hits include "Banho de Cheiro" (Carlos Fernando), "De Volta pro Aconchego" (Dominguinhos/ Nando Cordel), "Bate Coração" (Cecéu), "Remexer" (Luís Caldas/ Carlinhos Brown) and "Leão do Norte" (Lenine/ P.C. Pinheiro).
