Noel Rosa
11/12/1910
04/05/1937
Born and raised in Vila Isabel, on the northern side of Rio, he helped transforming the borough in a key-spot on the samba map. Noel died at age 26. Nonetheless, he left over 200 compositions, among which are undeniable classics like "Palpite Infeliz", "Feitiço da Vila", "Conversa de Botequim", "Último Desejo", "Silêncio de um Minuto", "Pastorinhas" and "Com Que Roupa?". He enjoyed music and nightlife since his teen years and soon dropped out of school. Noel was a good guitarist and joined the group Bando dos Tangarás in 1929. He recorded his first compositions, "Minha Viola" and "Festa no Céu", in 1930. Rosa always boasted a certain humor to report the urban lifestyle and love stories. "Coração", "Mulher Indigesta", "Com que Roupa?", "Tarzan, o Filho do Alfaiate" (with Vadico), "Gago Apaixonado", "Cem Mil-réis" (with Vadico) and many others are good examples of his fun view on daily events. On the other hand, as na accute Rio de Janeiro observer, he wrote the standards "Conversa de Botequim" (with Vadico), "Coisas Nossas", "O Orvalho Vem Caindo" (with Kid Pepe), "O X do Problema" and "Três Apitos". Noel sold some of his sambas to other singers and became known on the radio. Mário Reis, Francisco Alves and Araci de Almeida were among his most celebrated interpreters. Noel Rosa married Lindaura in 1934, in spite of being in love with cabaret dancer Ceci, who was his muse for songs like "Último Desejo", "Dama do Cabaré", "Pra que Mentir" (with Vadico) and "Quantos Beijos" (with Vadico). He had tuberculosis and was in and out of hospitals, but never let go of the bohemian lifestyle, booze and cigarettes. After his death, in 1937, his work was forgotten for a while, being rediscovered only in 1950, when Aracy de Almeida released two very successful 10" albums with his songs. Since then, he has been regarded as a fundamental samba songwriter/singer.
