Rogério Duprat
07/02/1932
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Duprat started playing the cello and joined The Symphonic Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro in the 1950’s. Duprat then moved to São Paulo in 1955, where he joined the Municipal Symphonic Orchestra of São Paulo. Duprat was one of the founders and directors of the São Paulo Chamber Orchestra and was one of the founders of the Música Nova (New Music) movement in 1961, together with Damiano Cozzella, Willy Correia de Oliveira, Gilberto Mendes and Régis Duprat. Later, Duprat wrote music scores for Walter Hugo Khouri’s films ("A Ilha", "Noite Vazia" and "Corpo Ardente") and met pop music artists, particularly the leaders of tropicália, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Duprat wrote the daring arrangement of the song Domingo no Parque for Gilberto Gil in 1967, winning a best arranger award at the music festival where the song was competing. In the following year, Duprat wrote several arrangements for the historical album "Tropicália", recorded by Caetano, Gil, Tom Zé, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, Nara Leão and Torquato Neto. Duprat also wrote arrangements for Chico Buarque ("Construção/Deus Lhe Pague") and Jorge Ben Jor ("Descobri que Sou um Anjo"). Duprat worked on first album by the Mutantes. Duprat spent some time writing jingles, but was gradually forced to retire due to hearing problems caused by endless studio hours and recording sessions. Duprat then retreated to his farmhouse in Itapecerica da Serra (countryside of São Paulo). The only music activity he carried out in the 90’s were the arrangements he wrote for Lulu Santos and Rita Lee’s albums.
