Zeca Pagodinho
04/02/1959
Zeca Pagodinho was discovered by Beth Carvalho in 1981, playing at an informal samba session at the Cacique do Ramos, in Rio’s northern suburbs. Beth invited him to record a track on her new album. A year later, he was invited by a record company to participate in a compilation featuring various up and coming talents in the rapidly-emerging "pagode" (a samba-derived style). The album entitled "Raça Brasileira" was successful both on the radio and on record stores. His first solo disc, "Zeca Pagodinho", was released in 1986. From that point on he never looked back, recording various hits - "Quando Eu Contar (Iaiá)" (Beto Sem Braço/ João Meriti), "SPC" (with Arlindo Cruz), "Verdade" (Nelson Rufino/ Carlinhos Santana), "Posso até Me Apaixonar" and "Não Sou Mais Disso" -, and amassing several Gold and Platinum Discs in the process.
Residing in a country house in Xerém (Rio de Janeiro), he succeeded in reaching across geographical barriers, bringing the samba and pagode music of Rio’s northern suburbs to their more affluent southern counterparts and the rest of Brazil.
